Russian petrochemicals producer Sibur has started production of ethyl-benzene, styrene and expandable polystyrene at its new site in Perm, as per Platts. The site, which has been upgraded and expanded at a total investment of over Rb8 bln (US$260.4 mln), will now produce 220,000 tpa of ethyl-benzene. The old unit, which had capacity to produce 120,000 tpa will soon be decommissioned. The reconstructed styrene unit will boost SM production at the site by 100,000 tpa to 135,000 tpa, making the company net long by about 85,000 tpa of styrene. These styrene volumes are planned to be exported to Europe and Asia via Vienna-based company Citgo, which it purchased in 2009.
