Westlake, LANXESS and Bayer declare force majeure following Hurricane Ike damage

Westlake Chemical Corp has pronounced a force majeure at its Lake Charles petrochemical complex, Louisiana owing to damages following hurricane Ike. The company says the production is hurt as it is still awaiting complete access to feedstocks. Most of the units are in the pre-start phase; however, the company has set underway its Petro 1 ethylene unit. Following a similar suit are chemical majors LANXESS AG and Bayer AG. LANXESS AG has declared force majeure for parts of production in Orange, Texas and Baytown, Texas sites after Hurricane Ike. They are still examining impact of the Hurricane Ike and are not clear as to when they will be able to restart operations. Bayer AG also announced force majeure for a large part of its production in Baytown, Texas. The company is confident that damage will be repaired in coming weeks and the temporary losses in sales can be recovered.
