Acrylic acid plant planned by Petrobras

Brazil's Petrobras has is to build an acrylic acid plant next to its Gabriel Passos refinery in Betim, Minas Gerais state at an investment outlay US$407-mil. Construction for the acrylic acid plant will commence in 2006 and operations are expected to begin by 2008. Investment contributions could be from potential partners in the acrylic acid plant, including Brazil's Elekeiroz and a potential international partner. Acrylic acids are used for the production of superabsorbents, which are used in nappies and other hygienic products. Acrylic esters as also derived from acrylic acids and are used in architectural coatings, adhesives and construction raw materials.
