BASF offers two brands of bio-polymers: Ecoflex, a crude-based bio-polymer produced from biodegradable material, and Ecovio made from renewable materials with biodegradable features. Since these biopolymers are raw materials for plastic processors, the company has extended its efforts to build up demand in Thailand. Efforts will be focused on developing Thailand as the market because the plastic processing industry is well-established and can utilize bioplastics in existing processes. Within two years, BASF hopes to penetrate the market and build demand by advocating supportive regulations to promote the market and increasing public awareness of the benefits of bioplastic products.
By developing the Thai market, BASF plans to meet growing demand from Japan and China. Though the markets and demand in Japan are well established, the markets in China have good growth potential due to introduction in June of a government regulation making only biodegradable plastic bags are permissible in the country
