BASF inaugurated a new steam boiler plant at its Yeosu site (Korea), a major facility producing raw materials for polyurethanes. The plant, newly completed with a total investment of US$63 mln, will deliver steam to BASF's MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) and TDI (toluene diisocyanate) plants in Yeosu. MDI and TDI are important precursors in the manufacture of polyurethanes, which are key materials contributing towards improved insulation in buildings, insulations for appliances, reefer containers, comfort seat and interior part for cars as well as in many applications such as refrigerators and footwear.
The boiler plant will use the latest clean air technology including catalyst bed and chemical injection systems to minimize emissions and create greater efficiency in steam generation. BASF first announced the plan to build the plant in June 2007 with the support of Jeonnam province and the city of Yeosu. With a total investment of US$63 mln, the plant was successfully completed on schedule.
