Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem plans to shut its ethylene cracker in northeastern Brazil for six weeks of maintenance. A company spokeswoman told BNamericas that maintenance work on the naphtha-based cracker, located in Camaçari in the state of Bahia, will start on September 24 and run until November 5. The cracker has ethylene production capacity of 1.28 mln tpa. It has two lines, one of which will be shut down for the period. Total outlay for the asset improvement and maintenance in 2013 is pegged at 1.54 bln reais (US$669 mln) by Braskem- this is around 70% of its total capital expenditure for the year.
In 2013, the company has carried out scheduled maintenance work on a 450,000 tpa polypropylene (PP) plant in the state of São Paulo, a 550,000 tpa PP plant in its complex at Triunfo in southern Brazil and on the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plant it inaugurated last year in the northeastern state of Alagoas.
