Celanese to shun VAM production at Cangrejera, Mexico by Feb end

14-Feb-09
Celanese Corporation, a leading global chemical company, has announced to shut down its 115,000 tpa vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) production unit in Cangrejera, Mexico, and cease VAM production at Cangrejera effective end of February 2009. The shut down has been attributed to the current global economic crisis, the expected decline in customer demand and the unit's cost structure. However, the company's Cangrejera plant will continue to produce other products including acetic anhydride, ethyl acetate, methylamines, acetone derivatives, and mesityl oxide to meet customer commitments in Mexico and other countries. The company release said it will meet its customer obligations for VAM production from Celanese facilities in North America, Asia and Europe.
