CO2-based degradable plastic project comes on stream in China's Hainan province

The unique carbon dioxide (CO2)-based degradable plastic chlorinated polypropylene (PPC) project, funded by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) recently started operations in Dongfang Chemical City, Dongfang, Hainan province. The project which started construction in July 2007, has adopted a patent developed by Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science. China and will have production capacity of 3,000 tpa 3 000 of CO2-based degradable plastic chlorinated polypropylene (PPC). The project is said to have an annual CO2 consumption amounting 2,100 tons and the ultimate product will be degradable carbon dioxide copolymer, a biodegradable material widely used in medical, agricultural, industrial and other fields.
