The packaging industry has been the largest market for polypropylene in the past few years. Unique properties of polypropylene such as transparency, stiffness, seal ability, twist retention and moisture resistance makes it one of the most efficient material for packaging. The demand for polypropylene in packaging industry is expected to grow at an estimated CAGR of 5.9% from 2013 to 2019, as per Research and Markets. The automobile industry is the next largest consumer of polypropylene. Polypropylene has outstanding moldability, mechanical properties and is available at a lower cost as compared to most of the other plastic material used in automobiles. PP is a thermoplastic polymer that can be readily formed by catalytic polymerization of propylene monomer. Polypropylene exhibits properties such as good surface hardness, high tensile strength and high chemical resistance that have played a vital role in helping polypropylene in gradually replacing other polyolefins for various applications. It is one of the most versatile polymers, which finds applications in host of industries such as packaging, automobiles, construction, electrical and electronics and medical, among others. The escalating demand from these end-use industries, especially in Asia Pacific is expected to drive the market. However, growing environmental issues such as recycling and disposal of polypropylene products coupled with volatile raw material prices are expected to inhibit the market growth.
