DSM Dyneema, the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®-world's strongest fiber-has recently announced to create its first line for manufacturing Dyneema Purity® fiber at its Greenville-based facility in North Carolina. The new manufacturing line for Dyneema Purity®, a specially developed proprietary medical-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber, marks a major milestone for its commitment towards the medical device market. The line set to be operational in mid-2010 will produce the latest grades, including Dyneema Purity® TG dtex 25 TS180, which provides the same high specific strength as existing grades at significantly thinner diameters, and Dyneema Purity® UG which is used to develop strong, stable orthopedic implants that provide consistent performance over a longer term.
As per a company executive, the new developments in medical technologies including minimally invasive surgery and component miniaturization will lead to strong demands for novel materials for improved patient outcomes. This certainly justifies the major investments made by DSM Dyneema in the biomedical market which will find applications in medical devices, implants, sutures, instruments and the like.
