DuPont Cosmetics Solutions has introduced an innovative new technology that enables broader use of DuPont™ Surlyn® ionomer resins for cosmetics and fragrance containers. Overmolding Surlyn® on polymer shapes increases design freedom by enabling contrasting designs for the internal and external walls, new decorating techniques and frosted or glossy effects on exterior surfaces. As per the company, Surlyn® provides the same transparency, feel as glass yet is not fragile. Since the innovation involves no glass in packaging, there are no parts prone to breaking for maximum user safety.
Prosper Zufferey, technical expert at DuPont Cosmetic Solutions says, "These new design options are very exciting. Intricate shapes and decorative effects such as sophisticated colors, metallic and fantasy coatings, frosted and unusual tactile properties - most of which are extremely difficult to achieve in extrusion blow molding - are easily produced by overmolding with Surlyn®. This can eliminate the use of glass in the bottle's design, for safer use and more cost-effective production."
