Efforts to hike PVC prices fail in USA

03-Dec-09
As feedstock costs continue to rise sharply since mid-summer, PVC suppliers in USA have tried to hike offers. Efforts by suppliers to raise polyvinyl chloride (PVC) prices by 3 cents/lb (US$66/ton) in November failed in the US vinyl segment, according to ICIS. The vinyls segment is firmly tied to the US building and construction industry, providing pipe, siding, fencing and numerous other products made by extrusion and moulding PVC. Credit difficulties, increasing number of bankruptcies and a flat 2010 predicted for construction are factors that have depressed downstream market outlook- more stressed than many had anticipated. Feedstock ethylene has risen about 6.5 cents/lb since July, while chlorine has been up by over 10 cents/dst (dry short ton) since late June.
