State oil company Petróleos Mexicanos said 30 people were injured by an explosion at a vinyl chloride monomer/ethylene plant operated by chemical and petrochemical company Mexichem SAB de CV in Veracruz state on April 20. Reuters quoted Luis Felipe Puente, head of federal emergency services, saying that three people had died in the explosion and as many as 45 were injured. The explosion occurred in the Clorados III area inside Pemex’s Pajaritos complex, Mexichem said in a separate news release. Clorados is translated as chlorinated products in English.
“All emergency protocols have been activated, including evacuation,” Mexichem added in the English-language news release.
