ExxonMobil gets record €3.3 mln penalty for failing to report CO2 from Fife Ethylene Plant

21-Feb-12
ExxonMobil did not report approximately 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its Scottish Fife Ethylene Plant, resulting in a record €3.3 mln fine from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). Under the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), companies have to pay a €100 fine for each ton of CO2 emissions not reported. The under-reported emissions accounted for just under 5% of the site’s total and that the error had been caused by ‘incorrect mapping of routings’. As per an Exxon spokesman “mistake was immediately reported when it was spotted and that the company has now fully reviewed and improved its procedures to avoid a repeat of the mistake.”
