Fire contained at Shell’s largest oil refinery and petrochem complex

30-Sep-11
Super major Shell has shut down the company’s largest oil refinery and petrochemical complex due to a fire that broke out on Wednesday. A fire ignited at the Pulau Bukom oil refinery, likely starting from light fuel components in the pump house and pipes, and spreading to other areas of the facility. There were no injuries reported from the accident, and all of the crew at the refinery is safe. Six fire fighters received medical attention for heat exhaustion and other non-threatening issues, and they have returned to normal duty. A surge in the fire occurred during efforts to put out the fire, but Shell reassures that the blaze is contained. Shell is working with the Singapore Civil Defense Force and other global fire consultants to contain and extinguish the flames at Pulau Bukom. The units near the fire have been shut-down as a precaution, and only essential staff is on site. An integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex, Pulau Bukom is Shell’s largest downstream facility in the world.
