First ever aluminum can with integrated thermoplastic closure

02-Sep-09
An innovative aluminum can with an integrated flat opening mechanism made from thermoplastic, called Ball Resealable End (BRE) has been developed by the firm Ball Packaging Europe as part of a 5 year industrial project. BRE is the first can which includes such a resealable closure. The closure is made from several injected molded plastic parts - an outer high density polyethylene (HDPE) cap and a two-component polypropylene (PP) inner element carrying a screwing mechanism and thermoplastic seal. The entire closure is mounted onto an aluminum can sealing end and is retained with a PP locking ring. The use of plastic has no effect on the can recyclability. The company is the European subsidiary of American group Ball Packaging which produces quality metal and plastic packaging for the beverage, food and household products industries.
