The market for fluoropolymers is forecast to reach nearly US$2bn in 2009, with volumes hitting about 210 million pounds (95,000 tons). This growth will be driven by an expected rise in demand due to the performance advantages that fluoropolymers have over other plastics and rubber.
The demand of fluoropolymers is estimated to grow by about 5.7% pa in the US over a few years with:
" PolyTetraFluoroEthylene (PTFE), the largest volume fluoropolymer to rise at about 2.5% upto 2009, in the face of competition from other fluoropolymers
" Fluoroelastomers expected to increaseat about 6.4% up to 2009, triggered by an increased use in automotive, aerospace and industrial equipment production, higher operating temperatures and greater durability in engines has become a trend.
" FEP consumption to grow as production of semiconductors, wire and cable gather speed
" Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to see above-average gains due to an increase in its use as a coating in construction applications.
