GAIL (Gas Authority Of India) is in talks to adopt a breakthrough technology in the Rs 6,000 crore Assam Gas Cracker Project, with capacity planned at about 280,000 tpa. GAIL plans to utilise lean gas (methane) to produce propylene, substituting costlier feedstock like naphtha. This substitution alone will give GAIL an annual savings of Rs 500 crore. Lean gas (methane) is generally used for power production and not petrochemicals.
GAIL Assam cracker was to be earlier based on the gas to be supplied by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL). Operationally, GAIL will be extracting the rich content from the natural gas supplied by OIL leaving out the lean gas which has very high methane content only suitable for power generation.
