Haldia Petrochem to proceed with capacity expansion as demand revives

30-Dec-08
Undaunted by the current global economic meltdown and recessionary trends, Haldia Petrochemical Limited (HPL) plans to proceed with its capacity expansion plan -project Supermax. The project is estimated to be completed in May-June of 2009 and will meet the reviving demand. Sluggish domestic demand in August-October period had exerted pressure on producer's inventory levels. The pressures have eased after demand started recovering since November. Haldia plans to augment by 30% its current production capacity of 5,40,000 tpa ethylene as well as other product offerings. Haldia is also increasing application and consumption of polymer products in West Bengal particularly in retail, agricultural and food packaging sectors. Use of leno bags, thermofoam containers and flexible inter mediate bulk containers and others are being encouraged to increase per capita consumption to 30 kgs vs the current meagre 5 kgs per capita.
