Low demand, overcapacity prompt LyondellBasell to discontinue HDPE production at Texas plant

09-May-09
LyondellBasell Industries, one of the world's largest polymers, petrochemicals and fuels companies, will discontinue production at its 480 mln pounds per year high density polyethylene (HDPE) site in Chocolate Bayou plant near Alvin, Texas by July 31, 2009. The company indicated that the low domestic demand for polyethylene coupled with increasing global capacity (particularly from the Middle East) prompted this decision. The HDPE site has a workforce of approximately 50 employees and those positions will be eliminated. In March 2009, the company announced the permanent closure of the company’s Chocolate Bayou olefins plant in March. The two facilities are located at separate sites. LyondellBasell has closed multiple manufacturing operations and offices worldwide as part of a global program to reduce costs and improve efficiencies.
