LyondellBasell plans HDPE plant closure at Texas by July 31

In a bid to rationalize capacity to cope with deteriorating PE demand in USA and shrinking exports, LyondellBasell Industries plans to discontinue high density polyethylene (HDPE) production at its 480 mln pounds pa Chocolate Bayou plant at Texas by July 31. Export opportunities are becoming rarer due to shrunken demand amid augmentation of global capacities, and this decision will aid the company cut down on costs and better balance supply in an environment of reduced demand. About 50 employees will be laid off due to the closure. In the first quarter, LyondellBasell announced the permanent closure of its Chocolate Bayou olefins plant.
