LyondellBasell Industries plans to shutter its low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant at Carrington by the end of 2009 as the plant is no longer economically viable. With a capacity of 185,000 tpa, this plant is one of the company’s smallest LDPE manufacturing sites and is unviable as current market conditions require economies of scale and low conversion costs. Projected customer demand for LDPE is expected to be fulfilled from the company’s other LDPE facilities in Europe at Wesseling, Germany and at Berre, France. The company’s 210,000 tpa polypropylene (PP) plant at the same site remains unaffected by the move.
