May naphtha imports for petrochemicals rise by 50% in Japan

Aided by a weak baseline in 2009, Japanese naphtha imports for the petrochemical sector have risen by 51.9% in May from a year ago, as per government figures. Imports of naphtha for ethylene production amounted to 1,776,324 kilolitres (1,237,633 tons) in May, as per the trade ministry. The average naphtha import cost in May rose to US$752.30/ton (48,740 yen/kl) from US$734.10/ton in April.
