Merquinsa, Spanish TPU specialty producer, has bagged the Frost & Sullivan 2008 Global Thermoplastic Urethane (TPU) Product Innovation Green Excellence of the Year Award to recognize its innovation in biopolymers, with its groundbreaking Bio TPU made from renewable carbon resources and successfully marketed globally under Pearlthane® and Pearlbond® ECO brands. The Bio TPU is used for a wide range of applications including "green" electronics, sports, automotive, footwear and adhesive applications, among others.
Bio TPUs are high-performance biopolymers with a biocontent from 20 to 90% according to ASTM D6866, offering a unique set of properties, such as low density, high flexibility, abrasion resistance, good toughness and processability. These Bio TPUs are fully recyclable but not biodegradable. A preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA) indicates that manufacturing Pearlthane® and Pearlbond® ECO product lines result in 40% less global warming emissions. Frost & Sullivan, the Growth Partnership Company, presents its Green Excellence Awards annually to companies that have demonstrated leadership towards implementing sustainable and environmentally conscious initiatives. Recipient companies have demonstrated a commitment to a low-carbon society.
