Since late June, spot naphtha prices have been steadily falling in Asia in line with crude oil prices, as per ChemOrbis. A cumulative decrease of around US$115/ton has been reported in spot naphtha in this period, while crude oil hass fallen US$14/barrel on an average. Spot ethylene in Asia have moved to post-2008 high in late July and posted a sharp decrease of US$40/ton on average in August. Despite the upstream energy complex retaining its bearish trend, spot ethylene prices have even edged slightly higher in recent weeks. Players are citing tight supplies as one of the main factors supporting the spot ethylene market. There are several cracker shutdowns in Taiwan, Japan, India and Philippines to keep the ethylene supplies restricted and relatively firm.
