New additive causes PET bottle to oxo-biodegrade in 10-15 years launched

14-Mar-09
Planet Green Bottle (Canada) and its strategic partner, Wells Plastics (UK) introduced its branded additive, ReverteTM which causes a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottle to oxo-biodegrade in 10 to 15 years to the Nova Pack Symposium in Fort Lauderdale on February 12 & 13, 2009. Andrew Barclay, Director of Research for Wells was the only scientist that made a presentation on the oxo-biodegradable solution as an alternative or an insurance policy against the 76% of all PET plastic bottles that are not recycled each year. Barclay however opened his remarks by reinforcing that Planet Green and Wells Plastic are pro-recycling and that PET plastic bottles manufactured with the advantages of the ReverteTM additive do not contaminate the recycling stream. Approximately 250 PET plastic bottle suppliers, executives and scientists representing the largest and most progressive brand owners of beverages globally were in attendance. According to the estimates made by two partners, a PET plastic bottle containing the ReverteTM additive will oxo-biodegrade in a 10 to 20 year time frame primarily as the molecular breakdown of the plastic is programmed over a long enough time to ensure proper shelf life.
