UK's Croda Polymer Additives, a leading provider of additives for plastics has unveiled Solasorb, a novel inorganic UV absorber that delivers UV protection and improved transparency compared to traditional nano-powders. Solasorb's patented technology uses the ultra-fine metal oxides, providing greater dispersion and clarity thereby leading to stable dispersions, low migration and long-term UV protection as opposed to conventional organic UV absorbers.
The new range is targeted at transparent film and bottle packaging applications, which require protection against harmful effects of UV light, and an attractive shelf appeal. Solasorb can evade vitamin loss, the production of undesirable odours in food and beverage packaging and lessen color change in cosmetic and personal care products. They are available in a fully dispersed liquid form or in a polymer carrier suitable for both PE and PP. Relative to the conventional organic UV absorbers, the inorganic Solasorb range provide increased UV absorbance and enhanced transparency due to effective control of particle size in metal oxides. Also, the new range offers longer life as opposed to organic UV absorbers which degrade with time.
