Sheffield Plastics Inc., a Bayer MaterialScience Company and the world's second largest manufacturer of polycarbonate sheet, has introduced a new polycarbonate grade for electronic sign applications which employ LED lights. The company says the new MAKROLON LD offers significant advantages over current plastic diffusing substrates used for these applications. Developed in response to the increased use of LED light sources, MAKROLON LD sheet performs equally well diffusing light in both flat and thermoformed electronic signs.
When tested against other commercially available light diffusing polycarbonate and acrylic sign materials, MAKROLON LD exhibited top rated performance eliminating hot spots and greatly reducing shadowing. According to the company, MAKROLON LD has 30 times better impact strength based on instrumented impact testing, when compared with acrylic sign materials and is backed by a 10 year limited warranty against breakage.
