As part of the preparation for the 3,000 km China-Kazakhstan oil pipeline, leading Chinese oil and gas producer PetroChina is expanding an existing oil refinery and building an ethylene cracker in Dushanzi in the northwestern Xinjiang region Refining capacity in Dushanzi is to be boosted to 10 mln tpa from 6 mln tpa and the ethylene cracker capacity will stand at a one million tons.
The 3.0 bln usd pipeline linking Kazakhstan and China will start operation in early 2006. Initially 10 mln tpa of crude oil will be pumped from Kazakhstan to western China, eventually increasing to 20 mln tons.
