MAN's straight-six cylinder engines are lighter and quieter as their rocker covers are moulded from polyamide 66. This composite solution made available by Rhodia Engineering Plastics is a rigid one metre long rocker cover moulded of mineral-filled and glass fibre-reinforced polyamide.
The new engine component which is a product of a joint project between MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG, the plastics processing firm of Elring Klinger GmbH and the raw material manufacturer Rhodia GmbH is made out of polyamide 66- Technyl A218 Mt15 V25 that contains 15% mineral filler and 25% glass fibre. This composition is the one that is considered to give PA 66 the necessary properties to make it suitable for the manufacture of rocker covers.
Properties of Polyamide 66 making it suitable for rocker covers are:
· high level of rigidity considered to help maintain low values of shrinkage and warpage
· high resistance to chemicals and hot engine oil
· heat stabilized
· low creep tendencies to help it contribute towards the long-term tightness of the cover seal
· A high welding strength
The rocker cover, attached to the cylinder head by means of acoustically decoupled mountings and sealed with a moulded elastomer seal, is characterized by a smooth surface finish - although it is heavily ribbed on the inside. This is considered to help reduce resonance and excessive sound radiation.
