Shell Chemical LP has decided to purchase Horsehead Holding Corp's zinc smelter facility located in Monaca, Pennsylvania. The proposed refinery has been planned to convert ethane from Marcellus Shale into ethylene and polyethylene. Shell signed a land option agreement with Horsehead to evaluate properties in early 2012, and plans have been in development since though a timeline for the project has not yet been set. The proposed US$4 bln ethane cracker would be the first of its kind in the US Northeast.
The closing date and the total cost of the purchase were not disclosed. After signing the third extension in December 2013, Horsehead began demolition work at the site in 2014 at Shell's expense. Shell's ethane cracker, expected to be completed in 2019, would feed production of 1.5 mln tpa of ethylene, 500,000 m tpa of gas-phased high density polyethylene, 500,000 m tpa of slurry HDPE, and 500,000 m tpa of linear low density polyethylene.
