China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. (Sinopec) is to Central China's largest ethylene plant. To be built at RMB 14.7 bln, the petrochemical project that includes an 800,000 tpa ethylene plant and 7 other downstream petrochem facilities will be the first project on such a large scale in central China. The complex to be located in Wuhan, Hebei province, has been approved by Industry regulator, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
This capacity has been planned to meet the central government plan to raise the country's annual ethylene capacity by 4.38 million tons through expansion and upgrading of existing plants by 2010, and by an additional 6.2 million tons via new plants. Currently, China produced 7.55 million tons of ethylene in 2005.
