Zhejiang province is a key producer of chemical fibers, plastics and other petrochemicals in China. However, the province lacks in the area of ethylene production. In September 2004, the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top industry planning agency, approved Sinopec Zhenhai's plan to build the project in southeastern China's Zhejiang province.
China's Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co. has completed a feasibility study for a US$2.6 billion ethylene project consisting of 11 crackers and a total production capacity of 1 million metric tpa of ethylene. Construction for the project is expected to begin by the end of 2005. Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co. is a subsidiary of China's largest petrochemical producer - China Petroleum & Chemical Corp.(SNP), or Sinopec Corp.
