Saudi International Petrochemical Co (Sipchem), currently faced with a lawsuit by US chemical firm Celanese for alleged violation of trade secrets, has rejected the accusations as baseless. Sipchem claims that the facilities have been designed and are being built using technologies properly licensed from Eastman Chemical and DuPont.
This is in response to the lawsuit Celanese had filed against Sipchem last week in Texas to prevent it from using its trade secrets and know-how in the construction of vinyl acetate monomer and acetic acid facilities planned by the Saudi firm. Sipchem plans to launch a 460,000 tpa acetic acid plant and a 300,000 tpa vinyl acetate plant at a total cost of 4 billion riyals ($1.1 billion) in the kingdom.
