Strike at Haldia enters third day: Project Supermax hit

24-Nov-09
The strike at Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd has entered its third day, impeding progress of the Rs 1230 crore Supermax project planned to increase capacity from 5,20,000 tpa to 6,70,000 tpa. The union remains firm in their demand for around 100% increase in the pay of contractual workers implementing the Supermax project. Implementing the Supermax project called for shutting down operations of the HPL plant for 90-120 days and the strike is likely to lead to further delays. Both the disputing parties made a verbal agreement in first week of the month to implement a revised pay and the Assistant Labour Commissioner prepared a COD according to it. But the HPL management on November 20 refused to sign it. The demand was to increase the lowest pay from Rs 3000 to Rs 6500 per month and highest pay from Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 per month.
