Leading US refining and petrochemical companies, Sunoco, will shutter its 400 million pounds pa polypropylene plant in Bayport by April 30 due to persistently deteriorating demand. That has made it financially unviable to run the 33 year old Bayport facility. Sunoco acquired this facility from Equistar in 2002.
Layoffs of few of the fifty workers could happen, while a few will be transferred to new positions wherever possible.
Sunoco has 3 other U.S. polypropylene facilities, including one in La Porte that can produce up to 770 million pounds of the plastic polymer each year.
