Top 5 leading vendors in global high-density polyethylene packaging market

19-Sep-16

HDPE packaging is used in industries such as food, beverage, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. Its properties of stiffness, moldability, and chemical resistance make it suitable for use in making various types of packaging including bottles, containers, cartons, bags, and others. Almost 70% of HDPE produced is used in packaging, both flexible and rigid. Its inert nature and ability to preserve products for long periods of time make it a popular choice in the food and beverage sector. The material also allows for easy printing, which is an important criterion for product promotion. Technavio has announced the top five leading vendors in their recent global high-density polyethylene (HDPE) packaging market 2016-2020 report.

According to the report, the global HDPE packaging market is highly fragmented because of the presence of numerous small and large vendors. Vendors compete on the basis of price, quality, innovation, reputation, distribution, and promotion. The increase in vendor competition may lead to vendors reducing their product prices, which could negatively affect margins and market growth. Some companies also have larger financial resources than others, allowing them to invest more in R&D and growth avenues. For example, in January 2016, Amcor Rigid Plastics introduced a new business platform named UpStart to facilitate small-volume bottle production. Intense competition among vendors and rapid technological changes constitute significant risk factors for vendor operations. Intense vendor competition has led to an increase in M&A, where smaller entities are being acquired by or merged with major players. For example, in May 2016,Bemis completed the acquisition of the medical device packaging operations and associated value-added services of SteriPack Group, a manufacturer of sterile packaging solutions for pharmaceutical and medical device applications. “The influx of local vendors into the market is also on the rise. Therefore, to survive and succeed in this intensely competitive environment, it is imperative for vendors in the market to distinguish their products through a clear and unique value proposition,” says Sharan Raj, lead packaging analyst from Technavio.
