Two breakthroughs from Inergy Automotive Systems reduce environmental impact

Solvay announced that its affiliate Inergy Automotive Systems, world leader in plastic fuel systems for the automotive industry, has started production at its Rottenburg plant, Germany, of its patented selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system using Adblue, which is reducing the concentration of nitrogen oxides in diesel exhaust gasses of the Audi Q7 TDI diesel. This system meets the demanding Ultra Low Emissions Systems standards of the California Air Resources Board, which are the most stringent standards in the world. The Rottenburg plant also started producing fuel systems utilizing the innovative Twin-Sheet Blow-Molding (TSBM) technology for the BMW 7 series and the Audi A8 series. This technology makes it possible to considerably decrease evaporation of volatile organic compounds through the plastic walls of the fuel systems compared to the already low emission rate from conventional fuel systems. This technological breakthrough is a huge step towards a zero emission fuel system. The TSBM technology has received two awards, including the Innovation Grand Prize of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds are among the gasses causing photochemical smog in sunny and dry weather. This smog can contain high ozone concentrations in the lower atmosphere causing respiratory problems. It is therefore considered a health hazard. Moreover, these gases are also considered as precursors of greenhouse gases and as such listed in the Kyoto protocol. Inergy's innovative technologies are an efficient way to considerably decrease the concentration of exhaust gasses causing photochemical smog.
