Dupont has recently developed a new process technology - A closed-loop
Nylon recycling process - for which it has been awarded the 2004
Environmental Award for New Technology in Materials and Processes
by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). DuPont was recognised
for developing the technology and Denso along with DuPont were both
acclaimed for the program to test the technology viability. This
is a closed-loop Nylon recycling process that can convert parts
made of glass or mineral filled Polyamide 6 or 66 into first quality
material in an economically viable and environmental friendly way.
This process generates resin that is essentially equivalent to virgin
nylon and helps promote the long-term economic viability for recycling.
Composite Recycle dissolves used polyamide and then filters away
contaminants and fillers. The molecular weight of the recovered
polyamide is increased to desired levels for the end application.
Used radiator end tanks were recycled into new radiator end tanks
in the test process.The results were very heartening and established
this as one of the most effective recycling technologies for increasing
the recycle ratio of end of life vehicles. The ability to reclaim
large glass and mineral-filled nylon components such as radiator
end tanks can aid automakers meet new regulations and benefit the
society by reducing landfill waste.
