PET manufacturing, or more correctly, the polymerization of PET has so far involved antimony trioxide as a catalyst. Studies have found that acidic drinks caused antimony to leach from PET, which can be toxic to humans when consumed.
Due to toxicity problems as well other problems with antimony trioxide, a new catalyst called titanium is now slowly gaining usage in the polymerization process of PET. Wellman, a leading PET manufacturing company has switched over its packaging PET grades to titanium catalysts and is now completely free from antimony catalyst system. The new grades are called PermaClearTi, aimed at carbonated drink packaging. Using titanium resins will allow customers to raise filling temperatures, reduce AA, reduce injection cycle times by up to 10%, and provide light weighting opportunities, while increasing clarity.
Besides, Wellman there are a few Japanese producers of PET packaging material which are also made using titanium catalyst system.
