Equistar has introduced novel linear low and high density PE resins and low density HMW resins for the first time. These would find an application in the several high-volume, tough film end-markets such as merchandise bag, food, and industrial packaging. Petrothene GA-605 is the LLDPE material with an 0.930 g/cc density and an 0.6 g/10 min. melt index. GA-605 offers excellent stiffness/strength balance compared to other lower-density LLDPEs, besides offering excellent optical properties. This would allow it to be used in single-layer structures, or as a cost-efficient skin layer in co-extrusion with standard LLDPE or HMW-HDPE. The food grade approved material also provides for excellent printability with a high gloss (40 per cent value at 45 degrees centigrade). Both standard, smooth-bore extrusion systems and grooved-feed extruders with short L/D ratios process GA-605 quite well, which also has a processing aid. The product can replace butene-LLDPE, and sometimes, hexane-LLDPE. Alathon XL3805 is the new HMW-HDPE material with an 0.938 g/cc density and an 0.05 g/10 min. melt index, made possible by Equistar's bimodal production capability. This material offers enhanced clarity, softer feel and improved tear properties compared to traditional HMW-HDPE. The greatest advantage of XL-3805 lies in it's excellent blending with HDPE resin properties which would greatly benefit the heavy-duty industrial sacks sector. The material, that allows for blending of up to 70 per cent of LLDPE, results in films which combines the dart impact and tear strength properties of LLDPE providing a stiffness equal to that of HMW-HDPE.
