Plastic Roads Could Soon Be Reality In Lucknow

Imagine a road with no concrete, just recycled plastic waste. Roads which can sustain extreme weather conditions. This could soon be a reality in the city. Giving a push to Swachh Bharat mission and combat plastic pollution, Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) will now construct smart roads using shredded waste material. The proposal will get a formal approval at LDA board meeting on Wednesday.

To test the viability of 'plastic roads', LDA recently constructed a 10km prototype near IIM-Lucknow. According to officials, the process doesn't need any complex machinery. It only involves shredding plastic to a particular size, heating and mixing it with asphalt. Chief engineer Indu Shekhar Singh said, "Impressed with the sustainability of such roads', we will place this proposal in the board meeting... If accepted, we will take help from the civic body to arrange plastic and rest of the waste will be collected from housing and commercial units in our jurisdiction."
