During the power black out in 2003, complete darkness could have prevailed along the huge hallways and corridors in the UN headquarters at New York. However, darkness was prevented due to the new installation of a product that provided non-electrical lighting. Acrilex Inc. had installed the Acriglo Photoluminescent series of acrylic sheets. The concept behind Acriglo is to be able to provide illumination without backup power sources during a power outage, or to extend the period of illumination once battery backup fails. This can be accomplished with standard opal acrylic with the photoluminescent pigment included, or in many different faux marble patterns. The soft blue glow emitted from a fixture with Acriglo lasts a number of hours and provides light equivalent to moonlight. Lining a corridor with sconces or ceiling fixtures can produce an effect similar to runway lights at an airport for landing aircraft. Unlike battery backup, or emergency generators, the glow in Acriglo is guaranteed to be there the instant the lights go out; there is no possibility of malfunction or improper charge, as the light bulb supplies all the energy required during normal operation, according to the company. Acriglo can be charged and discharged indefinitely without any degradation to the performance of the product.

RTP Company also offers a full line of glow-in-the-dark safety tape products- Photoluminescent Sheet products that meet or exceed common photoluminescent safety and egress standards. The new product line consists of glow-in-the-dark standard products that are available in roll stock or cut to length. The product offerings include a rigid polycarbonate sheet with white backing, and a flexible product designed for egress tape that is suitable for use as an EXIT sign sheet. The egress tape product is flexible, durable, resistant to cleaning chemicals, and tear resistant. and offer many advantages : The clear top coat provides protection against abrasion resistance to minimize scratching and scuffing. This protective film is also resistant to water, oil, acid, and alkaline materials. The sheet products are easily printed on with water or solvent based inks using flexography, offset lithography, screen printing and UV curable ink printing. They also can be laser marked with no pre-treatment. Because the Photoluminscent Sheet products are not PVC, the plasticizers will not migrate to surface interfering with adhesion of printing inks or adhesives that are applied to signs or wall surfaces. Nor will they have shrinkage problems and odor, or out gassing, that are associated with PVC Products.
