DSM Elastomers unveils new 'KELTAN® 1200A' EPDM grade

DSM Elastomers has introduced a new EPDM (ethylene propylene diene M-class rubber) grade that can be used on the one hand as shear stable viscosity index improver (VII) for the Petroleum Additives (PA) market and on the other hand as a processing additive for rubber applications. Keltan® 1200A, which will be available from June 2009, is one of the first of a new range of high performance EP(D)M grades to be produced with DSM Elastomers' new state-of-the-art Reactive Extrusion (REX) technologies. It was originally tested as development grade DE5001, and has been well received in the market. The new Keltan® 1200A is an ultra-low viscosity product, with a Mooney rate of approximately 2.5 MU (ML(1+4)@125°C) and has a number of key processing benefits for the conventional rubber market. Its excellent wetting properties for fibers and fillers and improved adhesion in rubber compounds, makes it highly suitable for applications requiring tack, such as conveyor belts and micro V-belts. Keltan® 1200A is able to reduce viscosity in difficult to mix compounds such as highly filled, stiff compounds. In addition to Keltan® 1200A, a number of new REX grades are under development and/or have reached the phase of pre-commercial customer evaluation. These include Keltan PA1305, a mid-Shear stable VII polymer and Keltan®1446A for curable plasticizer and high flow applications.
