EuPR voices PE and PP recycling boost to meet 50% target

12-Jul-08
Responding to the European Parliament's European Waste Framework Directive, European Plastics Recyclers (EuPR) body voiced that additional steps need to be taken to encourage PP and PE recycling complementary with a stringent collections for PET. This would go a long way to meet the 50% recycling target which is difficult to be accomplished alone by PET recycling. The EuPR called upon all the member states to act in order to put in place a waste management infrastructure for plastic waste and also mentioned that the definition of the plastic recycling was not bound by mechanical recycling alone. The EuPR also recommended the plastic recyclers to pre-register their substances for free with the trade body which may act as a cover for the recyclers to sell their recyclates. European policymakers have understood that member states need to act in order to ensure that proper waste management infrastructures are in place to deal with plastics waste. EuPR's biggest concern continues to be implementation of the Reach regulation, in response to which it is organising workshops.
