ExxonMobil Chemical unveils three new elastomer grades for films and polymer modifications

11-Jun-09
ExxonMobil Chemical has introduced three new grades of Vistamaxx™ specialty elastomers that are said to exhibit a very low gel count, making them ideal for high performance film and fiber applications. Like all Vistamaxx specialty elastomers, these grades can be blended with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), or used as interfacing layers with PE and PP structures, to deliver excellent tie layer and lamination performance. These specialty elastomers are said to offer very low seal initiation temperatures combined with high seal strength, making them ideal for use as a sealing layer in coextruded structures. Easy to process and available as free-flowing pellets, Vistamaxx 3020FL, Vistamaxx 3980FL and Vistamaxx 6102FL elastomers are claimed to offer good optical properties and good chemical resistance. Additionally, the melt flow and ethylene co-monomer content of the Vistamaxx 3020FL and Vistamaxx 3980FL grades makes them perfectly suited for other polymer modification applications. Vistamaxx specialty elastomers are suited for all polyolefinic blends and also can be a partial substitute for a variety of other polymers including styrene block co-polymers and polyisobutylene. According to the company, these elastomers can reduce compound cost and improve performance where a balance of flexibility, impact strength and transparency is required. Typical applications include calendered or extruded sheet/profiles, extrusion coating, nonwovens and injection or blow molded goods.
