Formosa awaits government nod for 10% capacity increase at its biggest ethylene plant next year

03-Apr-08
Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical Corp. (FPC) is awaiting government approval to increase the annual capacity at its largest ethylene plant by 10% to 1.45 mln tpa in 2009. No investment will be involved for the expansion as the plant's equipment supports the capacity expansion. The expansion has been planned in a bid to meet growing demand from downstream industries, and reduce dependence on imports. In 2008, Taiwan produced a total of 3.67 mln tons and imported 423,000 tons. Formosa Petrochemical has three ethylene plants that have a total annual capacity of 2.94 mln tons and three crude distillation units that process a total of 540,000 bpd. Formosa has applied to the government for approval to build a fourth crude processing unit that will have a planned daily capacity of 180,000 barrels.
