HPL likely to absorb 183 contract labourers in a phased manner over the year

Haldia Petrochem is likely to absorb the 183 contract labourers working in the company since its inception showed, with respect to whom Citu had called for a strike, in a phased manner over the year. This brings to an end, the first ever standoff between the Haldia Petrochemicals management and the Citu-affiliated employees' union. The matter will be finalised in yet another bipartite meeting shortly. The labour union general secretary in Haldia, placed a three-point charter of demands to the company management. The first was regarding the 183 contract workers. The plight of the families that gave up land for setting up HPL came second- HPL had promised in an agreement with the landloser families to give a permanent job to each family, which hasn't yet happened on the grounds that most of the labourers are unskilled. The union wants HPL management to conduct training for the unskilled and absorb them. The employee representatives wanted the HPL management to invite all the workers on April 2, the day when the management observes HPL Day. The management till this year has invited only the permanent employees.
