Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Corp and Sumitomo Chemical Co have embarked on the process of restarting their naphtha crackers that have been shut for regular maintenance, as per Reuters. Mitsubishi Chemical has restarted its No.2 Kashima naphtha cracker with capacity to produce 453,000 tpa ethylene that has been shut since Aug. 30 for planned maintenance. The company delayed the cracker maintenance plan by about two months after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami affected operations of its main Kashima complex. Sumitomo Chemical started preparations for the restart of its sole naphtha cracker in Chiba, with capacity to produce 380,000 tpa, shut on Sept. 1 for maintenance.
