The access roads leading to Edmonton area chemical plant were closed by authorities as a precautionary measure because of a leakage on the storage well at Dow Chemical facility.
According to a company spokesperson, the wellheads used for storing hydrocarbons were under maintenance when the leak occurred. The leaking wellhead was spraying ethylene at the plant in Fort Saskatchewan. The details regarding the gas release were not available. Nonetheless, the company assured that there were no injuries and the well was being soaked with water to prevent it from catching fire. The spokesperson addressed that the gas was dispersing into the air and there are no expectations of any impact on the environment or public at large.
Following the incident, the air in the vicinity was under the surveillance of on-site monitors.
